According to CNN, the pharmaceutical company Moderna is planning to apply for emergency use authorization of their COVID-19 vaccine today (November 30, 2020). The trial results for the vaccine prove it to be just above 94% effective in preventing Covid and 100% effective in preventing severe cases.
Pfizer, another pharmaceutical company working on a Covid vaccine, applied for emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on November 20, 2020. The FDA is planning to meet in December to review both applications.
When will we have a vaccine?
Unfortunately, we still don't have an exact timeline of when it will be made available to the public. According to the CDC, it was expected for us to have a vaccine introduced by the end of 2020. Seeing as tomorrow is December 1st and the FDA still needs to approve the emergency use authorization for both Pfizer and Moderna, I think we likely won't see vaccinations until Spring 2021.
How will a vaccine help the travel industry?
Having a vaccine will help decrease the number of cases in the United States. With fewer cases, states will begin to lift travel restrictions making it easier for Americans to travel again. A vaccine will also give Americans more peace of mind while traveling, which will give the travel industry the booking boost it needs. According to an article from National Geographic published on October 22, 2020, only 13% of Americans surveyed by National Geographic and Morning Consult say they would fly by the end of this year. Only 24% said they would fly in 2021. I'm expecting to see that number jump when the vaccine becomes available to the public.
