Disclaimer: I am not the queen of donuts.
If this was a review of chicken fingers, I could offer deep insights and life-changing observations. I've had hundreds of chicken fingers (that's a little gross to think about actually, but it's fine) so I know quite a bit. However, I've only ever really had donuts from Krispy Kreme or Tim Hortons - both of which are pretty good. So, before reading this, just know that I don't have much to compare it to.
With that said, I went to The Salty Donut last week. It's located in Wynwood, so it has a very ~artsy~ vibe. It's a pretty small space but it has indoor and outdoor seating so it wasn't too hard to find a place to sit. The line was wrapped around the side of the building but it only took about 10 minutes total to get my donuts.
Yeah, you read that right, donutS. I tried two. Pomegranate and glazed. I've never actually had a pomegranate but I've smelled the fragrance of it and it's always been pleasant so I thought, eh why not. I know that you can't really go wrong with glazed so I got that just in case I didn't end up liking the pomegranate.
Glazed donuts are always good. There's not really a way to make them bad (or at least not that I've seen). The reason I docked a point was because it was a bit too sweet. It's a pretty big donut and by the end of it, I was feeling somewhat nauseous because my body isn't used to that much sugar at one time. It was also more dense than I expected, which took away from the taste. Other than that it was great :)
With the pomegranate donut, I had no idea what to expect. It was really cute - totally insta-worthy. But it turns out that I'm not a huge fan of pomegranate, which automatically made it not-so-great. I tried to not let my picky eating get in the way of an honest review, but that was harder than expected. I'm actually glad it was dense because it balanced out the flavor. The aftertaste was a little harsh, which is why I took off so many points.
Overall, I'd give the salty donut a 8.5/10. I took off points for lack of variety and taste. When I went, they only had about 6 options for donuts and most were "quirky" options. So for my picky eaters, this probably isn't the joint for you! However, it's a very instagrammable place, quick service, and pretty good donuts. They also offer drinks (coffee, tea, etc.) and have water jugs available outside. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
