Flights can be one of the most expensive parts of traveling. So Allegiant Airlines having fares under $100 catches the eyes of many hopeful travelers. Flights for $49? Sign me up!!
But, as they say, if it seems too good to be true - it is.
Do they have flights at cheap rates? Technically, yes. But there's a catch ... well, a few catches.
Catch 1: Allegiant operates out of a shorter list of airports, and most of them are small. So, odds are you'll be just outside of your destination, and you'll need to pay for transportation from the airport to your lodging. This also means that you'll more than likely have at least one, if not two, connections, which in turn makes your overall travel time longer.
Catch 2: 99% of the time, they have one flight every few days. That means that if you miss your flight for any reason, you may not be able to fly out until 4 days later.
Catch 3: Virtually EVERYTHING is an additional charge. You'll be charged for your carry-on ($20 each way). Every checked bag is $30 each way. Your seats will be anywhere from $10-$22. If you want to get TripFlex flight insurance, it's usually around $60+ depending on the price of your flight. If you don't purchase the insurance and something goes wrong with your flight, you'll have to purchase a new ticket for the full fare amount.
Catch 4: That price is for one person, one flight. So if you're getting a roundtrip ticket, expect the price to jump as you get towards checkout.
Catch 5: The planes themselves are smaller, which means less legroom and less space for luggage. For those of you who prefer to stick to carry-ons for the fear of losing your luggage, this might be a deal-breaker.
Now, that's not to say that Allegiant is bad. There are times when they're cheaper than the bigger airlines, so don't count them out. Just make sure you understand the way they can offer cheap fares before getting too excited.
All of that to say -- they aren't a scam, there's just more to the story.
