This is going to be a fun article to write, and I already know my mama is laughing reading it. If you don’t get it yet, I’m the opposite of a light packer. I pack about 3x what I’ll actually need. However, I do know how and if I won’t take my own advice, maybe someone reading it will.
Packing lightly is no easy task. You want to look cute on vacation every day that you’re there. You want options when you get there. I totally get it. And there’s a way to do that without breaking your back.
My personal favorite is to bring 2-3 pairs of shorts at the most. One jean, and one or two with patterns/designs. Throw in 3-4 shirts and VOILA! You have a weeks worth of outfits! You can always flip it around the other way and bring more bottoms than tops.
There’s always the sarong, which is a lightweight piece of fabric that you can wrap around your body as a skirt or dress. Of course, this really only works in beachy, tropical places and if you’re comfortable in it. An alternative to this would be a versatile dress. I have a gorgeous blue one that I take on every trip with me because it can be worn at least 8 different ways (that I know of, I’m sure there’s more). I found mine at Windsor (the store, not the place), but they’re usually easier to find in the spring time at trendy stores or even department stores.
When it comes to packing your toiletries and other small items, buy travel sized. Target, and other stores similar, carry a whole aisle’s worth of travel sized shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, etc. If you’re staying at a hotel, don’t even bother to bring shower items (they’ll have them there).
Packing your makeup and hair products can be intimidating. You have your straightener, your curling iron, your hairbrush, any hair care products, and on top of that, a heap of makeup. My suggestion is to bring the necessities. If you’re hanging out on the beach all week, you’re probably not going to be spending a ton of time doing your hair. Choose between your straightener and curling iron (whichever you use more often at home) and bring it so you have an option if you and your crew go out to eat at a nice restaurant.
Makeup on the other hand is a little bit tricky. I know that contouring is an everyday thing for some people, but if you’re trying to pack lightly, ditch the kit. Buy BB cream instead of foundation. There are some great BB creams out there that work just as well (if not better) than foundation, have sunscreen in them, are lightweight, and give you that all-over vacation glow. Bring along the eyeliner and mascara and maybe a small eyeshadow palette. Chapstick is a must, and leave it at that.
At the end of the day, packing lightly just consists of planning and making decisions. Plan out your outfits so you don’t bring anything extra. Be honest with yourself about what you actually need. Honestly, packing light is better anyway, because then you have an excuse to shop. Am I right, or am I right?
