When most people think about travel, they think about taking weeks-long international vacations. They picture thousands of dollars being drained from their bank account. They imagine all of the hassle - money exchange, alerting the bank, changing their phone plan, taking time off work... it goes on. I used to picture it like that too. I'm telling you now-- let that go. While that kind of traveling is amazing, it's not the ONLY kind of traveling.
Here's the thing- a simple change of scenery can do so much for you. It can give you inspiration. It can teach you about a million different things - people, places, culture, food, even yourself. And I promise you- there's so much more around you than you know.
I was living in Tallahassee, FL (not exactly a hot spot vacation destination) and I was in a rut. I was in college at the time and I didn't feel like going to class - don't worry, Mom, I still went. But the point is that I loved school (I'm a nerd, I know) and I didn't feel like learning anymore. I didn't have the energy to go to the gym or get ready or hangout with friends... I was really down.
My roommate was in a similar spot, so we decided to just leave the city for a day. We went to Panama City Beach for dinner and from there, we went crazy. We spent weekends in Atlanta, Savannah, Jacksonville, PCB, and Tampa. We kept these weekends as cheap as possible - using points for hotels, bringing snacks for the road, finding affordable fun things to do. Just for examples - bar hopping on the Savannah Slow Ride (one of those contraptions where you peddle from bar to bar), Gasparilla in Tampa, ate snowcones at Centennial Park in Atlanta, etc.
While it might not sound like much, little weekends away are refreshing. They got me off my couch and away from Gossip Girl, which was nearly impossible at the time. It gave me something to talk about during the week and helped me feel more connected to the people around me again. I felt like I was learning about the world and it felt amazing. I started learning things that I didn't realize were a result of traveling like how to communicate in tough situations, how to be polite when you're stressed, and how to enjoy the little moments. Weekend getaways landed me in certain situations that taught me a lot about who I am as a person and who I want to be.
Even if you're not in a rut-- take a weekend. Go somewhere. Explore. Find out something new about yourself.
